Introduction

Job Mail welcomes the implementation of the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) (Act 4 of 2013) and strives to follow the edicts as prescribed by the South African government and the Information Regulator.

Your personal information has always been safe with us, and any data you submit to Job Mail in your capacity as a customer and user is protected.

In support of this, we take a closer look at our most frequently asked questions, how you can request a record of your personal information or the deletion thereof, what procedure you should follow to lodge a POPIA-related complaint, as well as links to our policies and PAIA manual.

Take note: According to our interpretation of the POPIA regulations, and following confirmation from our legal team, when you make use of Job Mail in any capacity, you are considered our customer since you are using services we provide.

Job Mail is an online advertising platform and do not take part in what transpires between the employers/recruiter and the jobseeker, and thus cannot be held accountable for any challenges or disputes that might arise between the two.

Job Mail cannot be held responsible for the personal information you display and make available to the public when you place an advert on our website. We also cannot be held accountable for what visitors or users do with the information.

1. What is the POPI Act?

It is the Protection of Personal Information Act (Act 4 of 2013).

To promote the protection of personal information processed by public and private bodies; to introduce certain conditions so as to establish minimum requirements for the processing of personal information; to provide for the establishment of an Information Regulator to exercise certain powers and to perform certain duties and functions in terms of this Act and the Promotion of Access to Information Act, 2000; to provide for the issuing of codes of conduct; to provide for the rights of persons regarding unsolicited electronic communications and automated decision making; to regulate the flow of personal information across the borders of the Republic; and to provide for matters connected therewith. 2. Why did I receive emails or SMSs from Job Mail?

If you received an email or SMS from us, there are two avenues through which you might have received them.

  • System-generated communications: These are automatically triggered by actions you take on our website, such as placing an advert, responding to one, or setting up alerts for the jobs you're interested in.
  • In your capacity as a Job Mail customer/user: You might have filled in one of the forms on our website or social media channels. E.g. a contact form, lead form, registration form, an advert placement form, or created an alert or added jobs to your Saved Jobs list. You also might have made a call via a call-tracking number listed on an advert on our website.

3. How can I unsubscribe from receiving emails or SMSs from Job Mail?

The quickest way to unsubscribe from receiving emails is to click on the ‘Unsubscribe’ link at the bottom of your email. To stop receiving SMSs from us, please send ‘STOP’ to 41624. This is free of charge.

Alternatively, feel free to send an email to popi@jobmail.co.za with your request to be unsubscribed. Please include the email address and/or contact number you wish to unsubscribe from receiving communication from us.

4. Why did I receive WhatsApp messages from Job Mail and how can I stop receiving them?

We do not add users to WhatsApp groups, which means that at some point you saved our number on your phone and sent us a message.

To stop receiving WhatsApp messages from us, please delete the Job Mail WhatsApp number from your phone. This will ensure that you no longer receive communication from our number.

5. How can I find out what personal information Job Mail has on me?

Please refer to the section below entitled ‘Request for record of personal information or data removal’.

6. How can I receive more relevant content from Job Mail?

7. Where did Job Mail get my personal information from?

There are various ways we might have received your information. These include when you registered as an employer/recruiter or as a jobseeker and any forms you might have filled in.
