Job Title: K9 Handler

Job Duties:
K9 Handling:
- Train the K9 of the company on an ongoing basis to ensure a quality service is delivered.
- Ensure the primary health and fitness levels of the K9 and handler is maintained, this included regular grooming.
- Ensure that the kennel of the K9 is proper and clean.
- Search premises, perimeters, areas, people and baggage with a K9 to detect suspects, evidence and exhibits.
- Ensure a quick response to positive signs from the K9 and ensure that the relevant stakeholders are informed thereof.
- Ensure that the K9 pursues and apprehend fugitives, this may include the tracking down of suspects.
- Utilise patrol dog to follow a human track to locate the suspect.
- Assist in training of K9.
- General kennel duties as and when required.
Maintenance and Inspections:
- Review the utilization and maintenance of personal security equipment.
- Take the necessary steps to ensure the most cost effective and appropriate utilization and maintenance of security equipment.
- Communicate security needs and challenges to senior management.
- Maintain the effective use of a security record keeping system and recommend improvements where applicable.
Crime Prevention:
- Develop and foster an interactive relationship with internal and external crime affiliated third parties and law enforcement agencies to combat and minimise criminal activities.
- Do extensive and proactive research into the core reasons for relevant criminal activities and make recommendations to fight criminal activities.
- Evaluate the protection status on hot spot areas and report it to senior management with recommendations on how to fight these criminal activities.
- Assist to develop and implement crime awareness programs and campaigns for personnel members to improve their services in the battle against criminal activities.
- Report any incidents to the local authorities and senior management.
- Investigate unusual or suspicious circumstances.
- Always maintain communication with senior management.
Crime Investigation:
- Plan and implement investigation techniques which comply with legal requirements and the policies and procedures of the company.
- Conduct investigations in a professional and effective manner.
- Attend crime sites and gather information and evidence.
- Question witnesses and gather witness statements. Ensure statements are written within 24 hours and handed in with photos to the relevant personnel.
- Identify suspects / syndicates out of current investigations / information.
- Identify the modus operandi of suspects / syndicates as well as the vehicles that they use in their actions.
- Identify the buyers (scrap dealers) where the suspects / syndicates sell the stolen property / material.
- Liaise with law enforcement agencies to verify and validate information.
- Update the Investigators on a continuous basis of all incidents.
- Do follow up investigations through means of informants and further information received.
- Ensure that your docket contains all the necessary information (including date, time, place, evidence, exhibits, witnesses, victims, names of individuals that arrested the suspects, materials used, photographs, GPS coordinates & CAS numbers).
- Give all information to the docket carriers.
- Testify in court when required.
Arrests and Convictions:
- Make necessary and appropriate arrests.
- Ensure a high conviction rate by preparing yourself and your witnesses for court:
- Ensure that all witnesses go through their statements before testifying so that they are prepared.
- Go through the court procedure and ensure that the witnesses are comfortable with the process.
- Ensure that the witnesses remember the detail of the scene. Ask the legal team to assist where necessary. Take them to another court case for preparation so that they feel comfortable with the process.
- Make sure you are prepared for court and know all the details of the case.
- Follow up on information to trace wanted accused persons in co-operation with the SAPS as and when required.
Required Qualifications:
- Matric / Grade 12 or equivalent (NQF level 4).
- PSiRA registered (minimum Grade C).
- K9 / Dog handler training certificate. (DH2)
- Any further education in policing / investigations will be highly beneficial.
- Valid code 8 drivers’ licence.
