Main purpose of the job:
- A full-time dedicated research engineer is required to support eResearch (HPC, big data), ensuring the Wits Core Research Cluster is well maintained and assist researchers and students with accessing various data sets on the server and conducting analyses; installing and configuring software, hardware and networks; monitoring system performance and troubleshooting issues and ensuring security and efficiency of the systems infrastructure
- The incumbent will be expected to support national and international projects
Location:
- Sydney Brenner Institute for Molecular Bioscience (SBIMB) - 9 Jubilee Road, Parktown - Johannesburg
Key performance areas:
- Installing and configuring software, hardware and networks
- Install and configure software and hardware
- Manage network servers and technology tools
- Monitor performance and maintain systems according to requirements
- Ensure security through access controls, backups and firewalls
- Upgrade systems with latest releases and models
- Troubleshoot issues and outages
- Train new system users and set up their accounts
- Set up new user accounts
- Inform and train users on new features
Required minimum education and training:
- Honour’s or Master’s Degree in IT, Computer Science or the equivalent
Required minimum work experience:
- 2 years’ experience as a system administrator or similar role (5 years preferred)
- Experience administering Linux systems and the command line is an essential requirement of the job
- Experience with databases, networks (LAN, WAN) and patch management
- Ability to create scripts in Python or other language
Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities:
- Knowledge of systems and networking software, hardware, and networking protocols
- Knowledge of system security and data backup/recovery
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Experience in bioinformatics and health informatics will be an added advantage
