Purpose of the Role:
To ensure the smooth operation of all mechanical equipment and systems within a cheese processing plant through skilled fitting, machining, and maintenance activities. The Fitter and Turner will support production by reducing downtime and ensuring equipment operates efficiently, safely, and in accordance with food industry hygiene standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Assemble, install, maintain, and repair mechanical components on production equipment, including cheese vats, conveyors, presses, and packaging machines.
Manufacture and machine precision components using lathes, milling machines, and other workshop equipment.
Diagnose mechanical faults and perform accurate repairs to minimize downtime.
Modify or fabricate equipment parts and components as required.
Conduct routine inspections and preventative maintenance according to schedule.
Ensure all work is completed in compliance with food safety regulations (HACCP, GMP) and occupational health and safety standards.
Assist with the installation and commissioning of new machinery and plant expansions.
Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, parts usage, and service history.
Collaborate with production and quality assurance teams to ensure equipment supports consistent product quality.
Maintain cleanliness and orderliness in workshop and maintenance areas.
Qualifications Required:
Trade Test Certificate: Fitter and Turner (Red Seal).
Matric (Grade 12) with Maths and Science is preferred.
Technical courses or training in food-grade processing equipment are advantageous.
Experience:
3–5 years’ experience as a Fitter and Turner in a food or dairy manufacturing environment (cheese production experience preferred).
Strong experience with stainless steel, food-grade welding, and sanitary pipework.
Experience with processing and packaging machinery, pneumatics, hydraulics, and rotating equipment
