Job Summary
The Engineering Manager is responsible for leading and overseeing engineering teams to deliver high-quality design, development, and implementation of products, systems, or infrastructure. This role involves managing multiple projects, ensuring the technical team meets deadlines, adheres to industry standards, and operates within budget. The Engineering Manager provides technical leadership, mentors engineers, and collaborates with other departments to achieve business objectives. The role requires a balance of leadership, technical knowledge, and project management skills.
AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY.
Team Leadership and Development:
- Lead and manage a multidisciplinary team of engineers, providing guidance, mentorship, and performance feedback.
- Foster a collaborative, innovative, and high-performance engineering culture.
- Identify team training needs and support professional development opportunities for engineers.
- Recruit, train, and retain top engineering talent, ensuring the team remains motivated and focused.
- Managed multi-disciplinary projects (Energy / Water / Transport / Development / Oil and Gas)
- Ability to manage multiple multi discipline projects concurrently.
Project Management and Execution:
- Oversee the planning, design, and execution of engineering projects, ensuring they are delivered on time, within scope, and within budget.
- Allocate resources effectively to maximize productivity and project success.
- Collaborate with project managers to develop project timelines, goals, and milestones, ensuring alignment with business objectives.
- Track project progress, manage risks, and resolve technical challenges as they arise.
- Cash flow management (invoice adherence to schedule and receipt thereof)
- Exco level Portfolio and Project Reporting (expected versus actual (completion / invoicing / cash flow)
- Client liaison for all work in execution during all stages (feasibility / pre construction / construction / commission and hand over)
Technical Leadership:
- Provide technical expertise and leadership in the design and development of products, processes, or systems.
- Review and approve engineering designs, specifications, and documentation, ensuring adherence to industry standards and regulatory requirements.
- Stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in technology, industry best practices, and engineering methodologies.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives, optimizing processes, tools, and technologies to enhance engineering efficiency and product quality.
- Improve upskilling for team to perform in more than one market segment
Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement:
- Collaborate with other departments, including product development, marketing, and operations, to align engineering projects with business objectives.
- Act as a liaison between engineering teams and senior management, providing regular project updates and technical insights.
- Work closely with external vendors, partners, and contractors to ensure successful project delivery.
Budgeting and Resource Management:
- Develop and manage the engineering department’s budget, ensuring cost-effectiveness and resource optimization.
- Monitor and control project expenses, ensuring that the engineering team operates within financial constraints.
- Negotiate and manage contracts with external suppliers, ensuring quality and cost-effectiveness in procuring equipment and services.
- Resource planning / forecasting / management.
Compliance and Safety:
- Ensure that all engineering activities comply with health, safety, and environmental regulations.
- Promote a culture of safety within the engineering team and ensure all projects meet regulatory and safety standards.
- Implement and oversee quality assurance processes to ensure the highest standards in product or system design and implementation.
Innovation and R&D:
- Encourage innovation and creativity within the team, driving the development of new products, processes, or solutions.
- Lead research and development (R&D) initiatives to explore new technologies and methodologies that can enhance the company’s product offerings.
- Evaluate emerging trends and integrate new technologies that align with the company’s goals and market needs.
Reporting
- Unified dashboard / single source of truth, reporting on key metrics at portfolio / project / milestone level over project lifecycle for pursuit and project undertakings,
Financial
- Sales Targets
- Revenue Targets
- Cash Flow Targets
- Debtor ageing targets
- Pursuit pipeline growth (4 times sales targets)
EDUCATION, LANGUAGE & QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, Software, etc.) or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or equivalent certification is preferred.
ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
- Experience in an engineering role and in a leadership or managerial position.
- Proven track record in leading engineering teams and managing complex projects.
- Experience in budget management, resource allocation, and cost control.
- Strong technical knowledge in engineering principles, design methodologies, and project management tools.
- Familiarity with agile development practices and project management software (e.g., Jira, Trello).
- Proficiency in engineering software relevant to the industry (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks, MATLAB, etc.).
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills, with a focus on delivering innovative and practical solutions.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams.
- Organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent leadership and team management abilities, with the ability to motivate and inspire engineers.
