Job Summary
Key Responsibilities:
- Dispensing Medications:
- Accurately prepare and dispense prescribed medications while checking for potential drug interactions and contraindications.
- Ensure all prescriptions are compliant with regulatory and professional standards.
- Maintain records of dispensed medications and patient interactions as per legal requirements.
- Patient Counselling:
- Provide thorough consultation and advice on prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) medications.
- Educate patients on dosage, storage, side effects, and drug interactions.
- Promote health and wellness through patient counselling on lifestyle and disease prevention.
- Inventory Management:
- Manage stock levels, including ordering, receiving, and checking for expired products.
- Conduct periodic audits and stock checks, ensuring proper storage of medications.
- Collaborate with suppliers and distributors to ensure availability of required medications.
- Regulatory Compliance:
- Ensure compliance with the Medicines and Related Substances Act and SAPC regulations.
- Maintain accurate documentation for legal and professional purposes.
- Manage controlled substances and ensure secure storage as per legislation.
- Clinical and Professional Expertise:
- Stay updated on new drugs, medical treatments, and developments in the pharmaceutical industry.
- Liaise with healthcare professionals to support patient care and treatment plans.
- Participate in ongoing professional development and training programs.
- Customer Service Internal & External:
- Provide exceptional customer service, assisting patients with their healthcare needs and concerns.
- Handle customer complaints or concerns with professionalism and empathy.
- Managing the front shop staff when they are receipting stock, conducting monthly stock take and when merchandising stock.
- Forging great relationships with reps to ensure we are benefiting from all the suppliers’ offerings ie: samples, discounts, consignment stock and better payment terms.
- Creating a friendly, helpful, community first culture at the pharmacy.
- Pharmacy Operations:
- Supervise and guide pharmacy support staff, including assistants and interns.
- Ensure the smooth running of daily operations, including managing workflows, maintaining a clean environment, and ensuring operational efficiency.
- Contribute to achieving pharmacy performance goals and KPIs.
- Keep track of the dispensary and front shop GP and upskilling staff on self-medication so that they are able to upsell and advise customers smartly.
- Managing front shop staff time and attendance, leave etc.
- Opening and locking of the pharmacy, ensuring that the relevant lights are off, taps are closed, aircons are off, sandwich board brought inside and alarm is activated.
- Keeping the owners updated at all times (daily if need be) on the shortcomings of the day as well as the wins of the day.
- Manage the debtors’ book for all customers’ accounts as well as outstanding payments from medical aid where scripts might need to resubmitted or customer to pay the shortfall.
- Manager the delivery times so that it is cost effective for the business while maintaining customer satisfaction.
- Pharmaceutical Care and Safety:
- Monitor and review patient medication regimens to ensure optimal therapeutic outcomes.
- Participate in health screenings and vaccination services if applicable.
- Maintain and adhere to all safety and hygiene protocols in the pharmacy.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Educational Qualification: Bachelor of Pharmacy (BPharm) or equivalent from an accredited institution.
- Licensing: Must be registered and in good standing with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC).
- Experience: Ideally 1-2 years of experience in retail, hospital, or clinical pharmacy settings. Experience with medical schemes and insurance claims is an advantage.
