Job Summary
In November 2023 Cabinet approved the Just Energy Transition Implementation Plan (JET IP) which included chapters dedicated to green hydrogen (GH2) and New Energy Vehicles (NEVs). The IDC is tasked with setting up the GH2 and NEV JET IP Programme Management Offices, which include an Analyst role (hereafter referred to as the “analystâ€). The analyst will support the JET IP Programmes in the IDC, conducting in-depth research and strategic analysis of value chains and industries linked to GH2 and NEVs, as well as ongoing analysis of supply- and demand-side conditions, leading to the identification of development opportunities and potential interventions to further the implementation of the IDCâ€s JET IP GH2 and NEV Portfolios Qualifications Degree in Economics, with Engineering or Science. A related qualification at the Honourâ€s level or an M. Commerce; M. Arts (Economics); relevant MSc, M. Engineering, MBA) would be an advantage. Experience 5 to 8 years†relevant and solid experience, preferably within an industry researchenvironment at a top-tier consulting firm, or within a green-focused non-profit organisation. Experience in conducting in-depth value chain/industry/sectoral research and analysis, at a first principles level. Experience in sourcing, compiling, interrogating, testing and analysing statistical information, for use in quantitative analyses. Experience as a participant in, and as a contributor to the coordination of economic research projects of a varied nature. Knowledge and experience of economic policies, as well as a strong understanding of the economic environment (international and domestic) and factors influencing it. Experience in policy-related research matters, particularly sector- or industry-specific. Knowledge of the methods/tools/techniques utilised in undertaking industry research and analysis, and their effective application. Exceptional presentation skills and ability to package and communicate technical information to non-technical audiences Advanced MS Excel skills. Proficiency in technical analysis. Experience in developing project financial models Understanding and knowledge of the economic environment (international and domestic) and factors influencing it. Understanding and knowledge of macro-economics and development economics theory and principles, as well as their application in industrial development and in the financing environment. Good understanding and knowledge of the economic and socio-economic environment in South Africa and southern Africa, including transformation and regional development issues. Understanding of the Development Finance Environment and the Just Energy Transition. Experience working in a high-level collaborative and culturally diverse environment. Ability to manage multiple competing priorities while building effective relationships. Extremely organized and persistent, with drive and determination to achieve goals. Internal / Operational Processes Conducting in-depth analysis of specific value chains/industries/sub-sectors within the GH2 and NEV-related and adjacent sectors, including their composition, performance, recent trends, outlook, risks and development potential, leading to strategic recommendations and the compilation of reports, publications, speeches and presentations. Contributing to the formulation of strategies for GH2 and NEV-related value chain/industry/sector development. Providing inputs into macro-economic and sectoral forecasting. Disseminating value chain/industry-/sector-specific research and information, both internally and externally. Assisting in planning JET GH2 and NEV Portfolio priorities from a sectoral perspective, including investment potential as well as associated developmental returns and risks. Analyse on a continuous basis, supply- and demand-side conditions in various industrial commodity markets and their future prospects, leading to the identification of implications for the JET NEV and GH2 Portfolios and of opportunities for further/future development. Undertaking technical analysis of the prices of various commodities linked to the GH2 and NEV Portfolios (industrial, energy and others). Forecasting of the prices of various commodities as required. Participating in new product development (e.g., funding/support schemes). Use of statistical data software programmes and model building to support strategy and policy development. Undertaking macro-economic and techno economic analysis on industrial and project related opportunities. Undertaking cost benefit analysis.
