Overview
My client a Sugar Factory in Uganda is recruiting for a Senior Manager / Superintendent - Cogeneration - Boiler Maintenance for their Sugar factory operation.
Overall purpose of the Job:
The purpose of the job is to lead and direct the boiler mechanical maintenance team on the correct and effective maintenance of boilers and auxiliary equipment, including plant such multistage and single stage pumps, fans, gearboxes, valves, compressors, belt and slat conveyors, high pressure pipework etc. The incumbent is also expected to manage cold and hot commissioning of the boiler after major maintenance work. The incumbent will also oversee some steam turbine mechanical and related equipment maintenance from time to time when need arises.
This will ensure that operations of the COGEN plant are smooth and efficient with a good equipment availability, thereby achieving the operational targets set by management.
Remuneration Structure
- Expatriate employees are remunerated in two parts:
- External Salary: 1st part: Representing the expatriate’s net Salary is directly paid either in Uganda in US $ Dollars or a nominated offshore account and is tax free.
- 2nd Part: Local Living Allowance (Based on Salary Banding Level for this position): A local allowance is paid which is taxable in Uganda.
- Gratuity: In addition to salary an Annual Gratuity is paid at the rate of one month’s external salary for each completed year of service. This is payable at the time of leaving the services of the Group.
- National Social Security Fund: Paid by the Company.
- Medical Insurance covered by the company.
- Vehicle / Transportation
- Working Tools: Provided by the company: Computer and all other necessary to carry out your work obligations.
- Mobile phone allowance
- Accommodation: The company provides family accommodation and normally expects employees to be accompanied by their families
- The accommodation is. provided with hard furniture and basic kitchen equipment, such as a cooking range, refrigerator, etc.
- Water and electricity accounts are covered by the company.
- Work Permits and Visas: Successful candidate’s work permit / visa (for self /family) costs and travel is arranged by the company.
- Annual Leave: 30 days paid leave per year.
- Return Air Passages to point of origin when on leave.
Knowledge, qualifications & Experience:
Education:
- O Level , Matric or similar education
- Diploma or Degree / BEng Mechanical Engineering
Experience, Skills and Competences:
- 10 years’ hands on experience as a Senior Maintenance Maintenance Superintendent in a high pressure (67bar or higher) and high capacity (+/- 160tph boiler) Cogeneration Power Plant preferably in a Sugar Factory
- Hands on experience in maintenance of mechanical equipment such as pumps gearboxes, valves, conveyors, compressors etc
- Experience in boiler Operations of high-pressure boilers in Cogeneration Power Plant preferably in a Sugar Factory
- Working knowledge in pipe welding of high-pressure pipes and tubes
- Working knowledge of COGEN plant operations including steam turbine, cooling tower. RO plants etc
- Experience with Turbo-Alternator maintenance will be an advantage.
- Strong leadership qualities are essential with proven track record of managing both maintenance and operations.
- Ability to train subordinates in boiler maintenance
- Ability to communicate clearly in English to subordinates and superiors
- Ability to use Microsoft Office package, especially word and excel
- Analytical skills to troubleshoot problems especially with breakdowns
- Ability to collaborate with other section members to improve overall maintenance and operational performance of COGEN section
- To manage and motivate subordinates in a fair and constructive manner. Able to take disciplinary action when required via the performance management system.
- Identify weaknesses within the team and provide action plans to correct.
Key Responsibilities:
- Ensure the safety of the team by ensuring that PPE and other safety equipment is always used and used in a correct manner.
- Ensure all statutory boiler regulations are strictly adhered and ensuring all boiler safety devices are always fully functional.
- Ensure that permits and other safety requirements are always adhered to in order to eliminate accidents.
- Perform planned seasonal and offcrop maintenance of boiler pressure parts including feed water piping, economiser, all boiler tubes and all related fittings and fixtures like valves, gauges, safety valves etc
- Perform the planned season and offcrop maintenance of boiler non-pressure parts including travelling grate, air heaters, ESP and wet scrubbers, bagasse feeders, boiler drum internals etc
- Perform planned seasonal and offcrop maintenance of all boiler auxiliary equipment like feedwater and makeup water pumps, fans, ducts, dampers, bearings, drive gearboxes, dust collection equipment etc
- Perform planned seasonal and offcrop maintenance of all other boiler related equipment such as belt and slat conveyors, compressors, ash handling plant, steam and water piping, valves etc
- Perform breakdown maintenance of the boiler, boiler auxiliaries and related equipment when breakdowns occur in an effective and timely manner as required by production demand.
- Ensure that during operations, effective daily equipment inspections are carried out by Mechanical Technicians and their teams, and any defects found are attended to as soon as possible
- Ensure that maintenance is carried out with the philosophy of “Do it Right First Time”
- Proactively identify areas for improvement to avoid unnecessary plant downtime or efficiency loss, resulting in loss of production.
- Ensure that staff not meeting required maintenance standards are identified and training given or requested for in order to raise the standards of maintenance.
- Ensure that required running and offcrop maintenance spares are always available by keeping inventory of spares on site and in stores. Indents to be raised and submitted for approval in a timely manner to ensure stock does not run out.
- Ensure that maintenance tools and consumables are ordered and stocked to ensure effective maintenance
- Ensure housekeeping of equipment and stations in the area of responsibility
- Any other task as assigned by Management
