Job Summary
To provide civil engineering services to iX engineers and its clients, including industrial, commercial water engineering infrastructure projects as well as construction monitoring duties, while supporting the broader iX engineers' business, values, and vision.
AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY.
Business Development and Support
- Work in teams with Principle Engineers, Candidate Engineers and serves as well as Project Managers by attending tender briefings, and providing inputs into tender documentation, writing method statements, assisting with pricing calculations and providing general support or leading during tender processes as and when required and in line with skills level and training provided.
- The incumbent will also serve to lead or manage the preparation of bids as required.
Internal Project Management, Health and Safety, Administration and Quality Management Procedures
- Comply with Company procedures and processes in terms of project registration and risk analysis.
- Comply with Quality procedures by ensuring auditable trail of actions during full life cycle of project delivery process all in accordance with company Quality Management Procedures.
- Comply with and embrace Health and Safety requirements in the workplace as well as on construction sites.
Project Delivery
- Ensure that project start-up processes are followed, and the project scoping is clear and approved.
- Prepare designs and reports, either as Lead Designer or by assisting Lead Designers/PMs with estimates, and liaise with other professionals, both internally and externally.
- Prepare and Review tender and construction documents for compliance with applicable codes/standards/guidelines/client specifications.
- Review and Develop detail designs, manage the preparation of drawings, and prepare tender documentation.
- Promote cost reduction and productivity-enhancing initiatives.
- Facilitate and assist with the tender and adjudication process leading up to contractor appointment and site handover.
- A working understanding of project finances and project budgets for medium to large scale projects.
- Where applicable, support the Engineer’s Representative to monitor and manage construction activities, including:
i. Attending site and inspection meetings.
ii. Assist the Engineer’s Representative with managing changes to the work scope.
iii. Managing installation quality and compliance with specifications.
iv. Assist Lead/Responsible Engineer with project finances, including preparation of invoices and financial administration, or serve as Lead or Responsible Engineer in this regard.
v. Managing and witness testing and commissioning of works.
vi. Assist the Lead Engineer with the close-out of projects.
- Liaise with other Professional and Discipline Engineers to ensure accurate and timely communications to ensure the best overall project delivery outcomes.
Training and Mentoring
- Participate in continuous professional development activities and training to gain/maintain professional registration.
- Assist with technical training and mentoring of others who are registered as in-training engineers/technologists.
- Provide inputs to training schedules/plans as well as serve as ECSA or SACPMP Mentors to candidates in the department.
Leadership and Relations
- Maintain good working relations with all stakeholders, both internal and external to the company, and always demonstrate professionalism.
- Interact with leaders and peers in such a way to command respect and to grow leadership skills.
Key Competencies
- Appreciation and enthusiasm for Bulk Water and Waste Water Engineering and its principles with an eagerness to grow into a knowledgeable Principle/Specialist to lead multidisciplinary project teams.
- Experience in Water and Waste water Treatment would be preferable.
- Experience in Stormwater and open channel hydraulics would be an added advantage.
- An aptitude for integration of multidisciplinary projects.
- Have excellent communication and critical thinking skills.
- Be a person of integrity and subscribe to engineering ethics.
- Ability to build and retain healthy relationships with others.

EDUCATION, LANGUAGE & QUALIFICATIONS
- Hold a B.Eng. degree (a post-graduate qualification in water engineering will be an added advantage)
- Professionally registered with ECSA or ICE for a minimum of 5 years.
- SACPMP registration would be an added advantage; and willingness to commence registration process is required.
- Have an excellent command of business communication.
ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
- Have at least 10 years technical (design) and practical experience in multidisciplinary water engineering projects.
- Have technical and practical engineering skills in the engineering design (hydraulics, modelling) of public, private and industrial infrastructure, including bulk potable water pipelines, sewer system, pump stations and associated infrastructure (experience in mining and industrial environments will be an added advantage).
- Have proficiency in Autocad Civil 3D, including IDAS, as well as WADISO, EPANET or other hydraulic engineering software.
- Have a basic knowledge of Revit Modelling (e.g. valve chambers and small pump stations) to ensure integration and collaboration in multidisciplinary projects.
- A well-developed understanding of all the related engineering disciplines involved in the design of public, private and industrial infrastructure projects.
- Ensure that projects are finished on schedule and under budget by working together with project managers, other engineers.
- Prepare and present technical reports and presentations to clients and other stakeholders.
- Ensure that water engineering systems are designed and installed per applicable codes, standards, and regulations.
- Keep abreast of emerging technologies and industry trends related to water engineering.
- Willingness to travel to project sites within South Africa and Africa if required
