Job Summary
Hire Resolve is currently seeking an experienced Site Engineer to join a reputable construction company in Johannesburg, South Africa. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing and managing various building projects in the area, ensuring they are completed on time and within budget.
Responsibilities:
- Does all or some of the following: Co-ordinates the technical control aspects on contracts; controls and
interprets cost data; - Advises on technical interpretation of specification requirements; may represent the company with
consulting engineers in matters of variance and claims on sites where there is no quantity surveyor.
Reports to Site Agent - Ensures the correct quality requirements are met
- Checks setting out
- Checks levels
- Checks plumbness and squareness
- Checks the correct materials are used in the correct place
- Checks the correct standard of finish is achieved by staff as well as by subcontractors
- Checks that staff and subcontractors have the correct drawings and are interpreting them
correctly
- Knows and understands the specifications of your work area
- Is able to draw up detailed snag lists - Area is run in an efficient manner
- Materials are ordered and delivered timeously, and are of the correct price and right quantity
- Plant is ordered and delivered timeously
- The job is correctly resourced in terms of people - Ensures area is run in a safe manner
- Knows what to do if there is an accident
- Has a basic understanding of the OHS Act
- Knows and understands any particular safety rules for that area
- Ensures the correct safety inspections are carried out
- Keeps area neat and tidy
- Takes action against any unsafe practices
- Ensures all people in area have the correct safety equipment
- Motivates staff to think and act safely - Ensures that there is no waste in the area
- Completed work, materials, plant, formwork and tools are protected and looked after
- Hired items are put off hire
- Work is done in an efficient and orderly way
- Quality is correct
- Materials are not wasted
- - Materials are not stolen
- Materials and equipment are not abused or misused
- Labour is working efficiently - Maintains a logical filing system
-Can be understood by someone else should they have to take over the section - Correct paperwork is done
- When materials are ordered
- When the client gives you or your staff an instruction
- When you or your staff give a subcontractor or supplier an instruction
- Plant is ordered or put off hire
- Time sheets are checked - Ensures the quantity surveyor is informed timeously of:
- Changes
- Additional Items
- Levels of excavations, rock, etc. - Ensures that your supervisor is informed of:
- Problems
- Delays
- Changes and extra work - Manages time effectively
- Procedures must be simple and effective
- Meetings must be simple and effective - Assists the professional team in:
- Provides information timeously
- Is proactive in alerting them to problems, poor communication, etc. - Manages problems effectively and comes up with solutions
- Communicates effectively with:
- The team in your area
- Supervisor
- The client’s representatives in your area
- Subcontractors and suppliers working for you
- The rest of WBHO staff on the contract
- support staff – services department, plant department, wages, salary, etc. - Has the ability to program the works, monitor the program and meet the program
- Understands and applies basic HR & IR procedures as follows:
- Understands disciplinary procedures
- Understands grievance procedures
- Understands hours of work, pay procedures and overtime - Understands the basics of site costing
- Checks labour allowables and costs of activities
- Checks materials allowables
- Checks plant allowables
- Checks subcontractor allowables - Understands the basics of construction
- Reads and understands all drawings, earthworks, concrete, reinforcing, brickwork, services,
finishes
- Understands reinforcing
- Understands the principles of formwork and support work
- Understands the principles of building material
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.
- Minimum of 5-10 years of experience as a Site Engineer in the building construction industry.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and other construction software.
- Strong knowledge of construction materials, methods, and techniques.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Valid driver's license.
- Registration with relevant professional bodies is a plus.
