POSITION: Foundry Foreman
DEPARTMENT: Foundry Departments (Moulding, Melting, Pattern Shop & Grinding)
REPORTING TO: Foundry Manager
MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Grade 12 (Std. 10) with Mathematics
• Trade Certificate as Artisan Moulder or Pattern Maker
MINIMUM WORK EXPERIENCE:
• At least 10 years’ experience after qualifying in trade in a Foundry Environment
• 5 Years’ experience in Supervisory Capacity in a Foundry Environment which includes patternmaking/moulding and melting of Grey and SG Iron
SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES
• Verbal and written Communication skills in English as a minimum. Afrikaans an advantage
• Performance management of subordinates i.e. strong supervisory skills
• Ability to identify training needs & deal with employees admin for e.g. clock cards/overtime sheets, IR, absenteeism
• Interpersonal skills (interact with other departments)
• Ability to plan foundry production and allocate work and meet production targets
• Attention to detail especially with respect to backlog etc. and ability to work under pressure and to meet deadlines
• Computer Literate and proficient in Excel and Word as well as excellent numerical skills
SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
Moulding Activities
Ensure production programs prepared and actioned as per production plan and backlog report
Manage throughput through foundry to achieve production targets
Ensure necessary equipment and materials are available to maintain production output
Liaise with Melting & Production Supervision when metal is required to fulfil casting targets
Participate in scrap meetings, investigate root cause and define corrective action
Review foundry practices and recommend improvements to Foundry Manager
Ensure pattern equipment reported to Pattern Shop Foreman & that patterns checked before use and used correctly
Assist with preparing moulds where the need arises
Ensure waste sand removed from foundry to waste area. Liaise with Stores & Facilities Manager for sand disposal
Liaise with Planning Department in terms of due dates for new orders
Review moulding methods and recommend changes to Foundry Manager
Manage trial castings scheduled as per backlog report
Ensure required preventative maintenance checks performed by Foundry personnel & Maintenance Dept
Report breakdowns to Maintenance Department using maintenance work orders
Melting
Supervise Melting activities and ensure sufficient resources are available (equipment, people etc.)
Liaise with Melting Supervisors on metal properties and tapping temperatures required to accommodate casting designs in accordance with QMS procedures
Assist with relining and sintering of furnaces when required
Casting
Ensure moulds ready for casting as planned & liaise with Melting & Foundry C/Hand & establish casting sequence
Grinding
Supervise Grinding to ensure effective casting processing for delivery and ensure sufficient resources are available
Pattern Making
Supervise activities in the Pattern Shop and ensure patterns are available for production purposes
Ensure pattern register is maintained by Pattern Controller as per QMS procedures
Plan activities in Pattern Shop based on targets to ensure patterns available and that they are maintained & stored properly
Assist with inspection/manufacturing of patterns in case of lack of resources or complex products
Other Duties
Perform any other duties within reason as requested by Line Manager and work shifts and overtime as required
Ensure process controls as defined in SHEQ procedures as well as other SHEQ procedures are implemented and maintained
Supervision
Performance manage subordinates and monitor work attendance and effective utilisation of HR & equipment
Identify training needs of subordinates, conduct training/arrange for such training and conduct competency evaluations
Ensure Employees are wearing required PPE and report incidents to SHE Officer and investigate incidents
Work in accordance with SHEQ & HR Procedures applicable to job & ensure records retained as per SHEQ/HR procedures
Act as Foundry Manager or stand in for Line Management in absence of these employees
